FAQ

A Zoom-based orientation for students in the U.S. will be held every weekday during the first two weeks of August (schedule to be posted on this website); students can log in to whichever is most convenient. Student housing will be available from mid-August through December 31 for those students studying in the fall. Housing will be available from approximately January 9 through May 31 for those studying in the spring. Students should plan to arrive in the Kingdom one week before the start of classes (which for fall semester 2026 begin August 23). Orientation on each university campus is typically held during the week before classes begin. Students should plan to vacate their apartment on or before December 31 (for fall study only) and May 31 (for full academic year or spring study).

Students have normal access to their residence during this period. If they are studying for the full academic year then there is no interruption in their access to their residence. It will be available from the time they arrive in the fall until their departure by the end of June. They are also free to return to the U.S. for the holidays. We recommend that parents/relatives visit their student in Saudi Arabia during this time since the student is free, tourists are few, and the weather is mild.

Student rooming assignments are by gender, but otherwise random. Student participants may request to room with another student. Please email jalal@studyinthekingdom.com and we will do our best to accommodate you.

Students should bring light clothes (nothing too risqué; in particular, women should avoid shorts and cover their shoulders) but will need a jacket for the winter months. A laptop computer would also be useful; a cell phone is essential.

Saudi Arabia, including both Jeddah and Riyadh, is very hot during certain months. Average monthly temperatures are found below :

Students will be enrolled in an appropriate Arabic language course based on testing during each semester that they are enrolled. In addition to an Arabic language course, there are at least 12 English language courses to choose from at each university. Otherwise, they are free to take any courses offered. See the King Abdulaziz University course catalog here. See the King Saud University course catalog here.

The currency used in Saudi Arabia is the Riyal, which can be obtained from banks in the U.S. before departure, at the airport, or in any bank. Credit cards and nearly all forms of digital payment are widely accepted. Students should call their bank and credit card carriers to tell them that they will be abroad for the semester. Students should carry debit or credit cards with them. Both Visa and MasterCard are widely accepted forms of payment, Discover and AmEx are less commonly accepted. For exchange rates, see Currency Converter.

Local transportation is easy in both Jeddah and Riyadh. Other than walking, bus is the cheapest method of transportation in Jeddah. Riyadh has a brand new, state-of-the-art subway that will whisk you anywhere in the city very cheaply. In addition, taxis, Uber, Careem, and other ride-sharing options abound. Travel within the country is also quite inexpensive and can be accomplished by bus, train, or plane.

If the Islamic holy month of Ramadan occurs during the semester, early classes are rescheduled to begin at 10 a.m. instead of 8 a.m. and classes end at 3 p.m. instead of 5 p.m. Some classes may be conducted during the evening. This is also the case with exams. The university closes for the final five days of Ramadhan. Both King Abdulaziz University and King Saud University ensure that the total amount of class time is the same in a semester during which Ramadhan falls as those when it does not.

A flexible, positive attitude will carry you far among the Saudi people.
